Question:

Please advise me of the risk in having a colonoscopy with the change in the bowel area made for the urostomy. Is the procedure the same as when without this. Does the scope come near where the alteration was made in the bowel area?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. The answer depends on the type of colonoscopy being performed—whether it is a short or long colonoscopy.

A long colonoscopy reaches closer to the ileum, which is the area involved during the creation of a urostomy. Since any medical procedure carries some degree of risk, it is important to discuss your concerns with your surgeon before undergoing the exam.

Your surgeon will be in the best position to evaluate your specific case, provide accurate information about potential risks, and help you fully understand what to expect during the procedure.
