March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most common cancers in Canada. On March 20, Lisa Morales from CP24 Breakfast News in Toronto interviewed Janet Paquet, the vice-chair of Ostomy Canada, about the realities of living with an ostomy and the challenges patients face.

Adjusting to Life with an Ostomy

Receiving an ostomy, whether temporary or permanent, is a significant life change. Many people worry about practical issues, such as:

  • How to prevent leaks
  • How to wear normal clothing, like jeans
  • How to feel confident swimming or being active

Janet emphasized that these concerns are normal, and Ostomy Canada exists to support people during this transition. The organization offers resources, peer support, and guidance to help individuals feel empowered in their new reality.

Challenges with Ostomy Supply Coverage in Canada

One of the key issues discussed was the lack of universal ostomy supply coverage. While Ontario provides some funding, the provincial government is not meeting its commitment to cover 75% of the cost. Other provinces provide little or no coverage at all, leaving many individuals struggling to afford essential ostomy products.

Unlike universal healthcare in Canada, ostomy supply funding varies widely by province. This disparity creates financial stress for patients who depend on these supplies for their daily well-being. Advocacy efforts continue to push for improved funding and accessibility across the country.

Ostomy Canada: A Lifeline for Support

Beyond advocacy, Ostomy Canada Society plays a crucial role in education, support, and community-building for ostomy patients. Whether it’s connecting people to peer support groups, offering resources on managing leaks, or helping individuals regain confidence in daily activities, the organization is a valuable ally for those navigating life with an ostomy.
