Question:
I would love to learn more about how to exercise safely with an ostomy. I know you’ve had speakers on this topic in the past, but I still have concerns.
I am always afraid that certain exercises in my fitness class might increase my risk of developing a parastomal hernia.
Answer:
Thank you so much for your inquiry. This is a common concern for many of us living with ostomies, and I am so glad you asked.
Since you are already participating in an exercise class, I hope that you have been medically cleared for exercise. There is minimal research available on exercising with an ostomy, but I recently summarized and discussed this topic in the most recent Ostomy Canada magazine. I will attach the article for your reference.
Additionally, I recommend considering the use of an ostomy hernia belt to provide extra support when engaging in more intense activities such as:
- Group exercise classes
- Lifting weights
- Spin classes
- Challenging hikes
I hope the article provides the answers you are looking for. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out again.
