On March 15, 2025, the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities announced that the Canada Disability Benefit Regulations have been made and will come into force on May 15, 2025.
Please note that the application process for the Canada Disability Benefit is not yet open. The Government will provide details on the application process in the coming months, including when, where, and how to apply. As announced in the Budget 2024, the Government is committed to begin payment of the Canada Disability Benefit in July 2025.
The Canada Disability Benefit is a new income-tested benefit for low-end and modest-income working-age individuals with disabilities, providing up to $200.00 per month.
Eligibility
Age: 18-64 years
Disability: Must have been approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Residency: Be a resident of Canada for the purposes of the Income Tax Act
Tax Return: Must have filed an income tax return (and their spouse/common-law partner if applicable) for the previous tax year.
Citizenship/Status: Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the past 18 months, or someone registered or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act.
Benefit Details
Amount: Up to $200. Per month (the payment amount is based on income and other factors
Timing: Eligibility starts June 2025, with payments in July.
Type: Income-tested benefit
How to Apply
Disability Tax credit:
Individuals need to first apply for and be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Form T2201:
Applicants must complete the Disability Tax Credit Certificate, known as Form 2201, to identify their disability and provide details needed for assessment.
Tax Return:
File an income tax return.
Benefit Application:
The Canada Disability Benefit application process is expected to be through the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and will be announced closer to launch date.
Benefit Thresholds
23,000 if the beneficiary is single.
32,500 if the beneficiary is married or has a common-law partner.

What Medical Conditions Qualify for Disability in Canada
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not list specific medical conditions for the Disability Tax credit (DTC) but rather focuses on the severity and duration of an impairment verification by a medical practitioner via formT2201.
Representatives
This is someone who acts on behalf of an applicant or beneficiary who is unable to manage their own affairs. A representative can:
- Complete the benefit application
- Request that a decision be reconsidered
- Appeal a decision
- a legal representative (such as a guardian or trustee) can also receive payments on behalf of a beneficiary.
