Hydrogen-Rich Water and Ileostomy: Is It Safe?

Question:

My mom had an ileostomy approximately a year ago. This past month, she experienced two consecutive blockages, resulting in two surgeries.

Has anyone with an ileostomy tried hydrogen-rich water? It is marketed as a natural anti-inflammatory, but there is no available information on its safety for people with an ostomy.

Thank you.

Answer:

Currently, there is no scientific evidence supporting the claim that hydrogen-rich water provides any anti-inflammatory benefits. Given the lack of research, I would not recommend spending money or effort on sourcing it.

If your concern is avoiding potential toxins or impurities in tap water, consider using a home filtration system or drinking distilled water.

For individuals with an ostomy, staying properly hydrated is far more important. Water intake should be adjusted based on height, weight, and individual needs. For example, as a J-pouch ostomate, I personally consume at least 10 glasses of water daily, adding an extra 3 glasses to compensate for my body’s reduced ability to absorb fluids. Additionally, I include electrolytes in the first 8 glasses of water I drink each day to help maintain proper hydration and electrolyte balance.

If your mom is experiencing frequent blockages, consulting with an ostomy nurse or a healthcare provider may provide better solutions for hydration and dietary adjustments.
