How Long Can I Wear My Urostomy Pouch?

Question:

I have a question. I use a one-piece Hollister pre-cut pouch for my urostomy, and I’ve had good luck with it. I currently change it every 7 days with no issues. Can I safely wait longer between changes?

Thank you in advance. I’ve been wearing this type of pouch for almost two years.

Answer:

The frequency of pouch changes can vary depending on several factors and is unique to each individual.

The skin, being the body’s largest organ, sheds approximately 500 million cells a day and releases oils and sweat. These natural functions, combined with the type of ostomy output, can affect how well the adhesive barrier performs. In general, more liquid output—like urine—places more strain on the skin barrier than formed stool, making wear time more variable.

Other considerations include:

  • Sweating or sebum (oil) production, which can cause the barrier to loosen
  • Peristomal skin conditions, which may require more frequent changes to allow for skin assessment and care

The primary goals of an ostomy pouching system are to:

  • Protect the peristomal skin
  • Contain output (urine or stool)
  • Provide consistent and comfortable wear time

Accessories such as barrier rings or paste can help strengthen the seal and extend wear time if needed.

Although there are no strict guidelines for maximum wear time, 7 days is generally considered the upper limit for an ostomy barrier to remain in place while maintaining healthy peristomal skin.

It’s always best to consult your health care provider or NSWOC to determine the ideal wear time for your specific needs and to ensure continued skin health and leakage prevention.

I hope this answered your question. If you’d like more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
