Question:
I’m planning to travel and was wondering if there’s anything I need to prepare in advance? Do I need to inform Security or USINS about my ostomy before going through? I haven’t traveled by air since I got sick in August 2022. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer:
Yes, there are a few things you can do to ensure a smoother travel experience with an ostomy.
Airport Security & Screening
- Inform Security: It’s a good idea to let security staff know that you have an ostomy before going through screening. Your pouch may set off security scanners.
- Use a Travel Communication Card: These cards explain your ostomy and any special considerations to airport staff. They are available in multiple languages and can be printed online.
- Special Assistance Lines: You may opt to use the family or special needs security line, where staff are trained to provide additional assistance.
- Be Proactive: Before walking through security or having a pat-down, make eye contact with the security officer and inform them that you have had abdominal surgery and wear a medical device on your abdomen. If further explanation is needed, request a private screening.
Packing & Supplies
- Bring Extra Supplies: Pack at least double the amount of ostomy supplies you’d typically use, as you may need to change your appliance more frequently.
- Use Carry-On Luggage: Always keep essential ostomy supplies in your carry-on in case your checked luggage is lost or delayed. Some airlines allow an extra carry-on bag for medical supplies—confirm this with your airline in advance.
- Pre-Cut Supplies for Convenience: Pre-cut pouches and accessories can make changes easier while traveling.
Comfort During the Flight
- Choose the Right Seat: An aisle seat or one near the bathroom can provide more convenience.
- Manage Gas & Bloating: Flying can increase gas production. To minimize discomfort:
- Avoid carbonated beverages and drinking through a straw.
- Consider using an ostomy deodorizer or carrying a discreet air freshener.
Additional Travel Tips
- Know Local Healthcare Resources: Research medical facilities and ostomy supply stores at your destination in case of emergencies.
- Keep a Backup Plan: Carry a spare pouch or appliance in your pocket or bag, especially on excursions.
- Stay Hydrated & Monitor Your Diet: Traveling can affect digestion. Avoid foods that may irritate your stoma or cause excessive gas.
- Carry Medications & Documentation: Keep medications in your carry-on, along with prescriptions and a doctor’s note explaining your medical supplies if needed for customs.
- Plan for Customs & Immigration: Some international destinations may require additional screening of medical supplies.
