Managing Colostomy Challenges: Expert Tips for Better Adherence

Question:

I have a white circle surrounding my colostomy with a hernia. This also makes it hard for the seal to adhere as it’s not a flat surface. It seems to stay moist, making it harder for the seal to stay dry. Do you have any suggestions that I might try (samples)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had 2 surgeries and the doctors don’t recommend any more.

Response:

It sounds like you are dealing with macerated tissue due to leakage or moisture. Here are some suggestions that may help:

  1. Protect the Skin Around the Stoma:
    • Use No Sting Cavilon Barrier Film wipes on the peri-ostomy skin. Wipe the area well and allow it to dry for 5 to 10 seconds. This helps prevent or reduce macerated skin.
    • Once dry, apply a layer of strip paste or stoma paste on the skin surrounding the stoma.
  2. Improve Flange Adherence:
    • Press the flange well with your fingertips for 2 to 3 minutes. The warmth from your fingers increases adherence to the skin.
    • Adherence may be more challenging with a hernia. Wearing an ostomy belt can help secure the appliance better.
  3. Request Free Samples:
    • Many manufacturers offer free samples of these products. It’s a good idea to request them to find what works best for you.
  4. Consider a Hernia Belt:
    • A hernia belt, specifically made based on your abdomen dimensions and stoma placement, can provide additional support. These belts usually cost between $100 and $200.

I hope this helps.
